About This Report

The Digital Futures team continues to scan the business environment for new patterns of events that suggest areas of change and opportunity for our clients. This report is the third in our DF Scan series.

Our scanning process identifies new events and uses a team approach to cluster these events to detect patterns. These patterns allow us to watch for other events that will support (or detract from) the emerging opportunities or threats. Not all the patterns emerge as new trends, but maintaining a watch over the patterns gives us early warning and reduces surprises.

This DF Scan report covers four areas of emerging interest. Some of these areas will have long-term impacts, but some—such as the discussion of the session initiation protocol (SIP)—will have market impacts in the next two years. This document covers:
  • Session initiation protocol. The Internet Engineering Task Force announcement of SIP will drive faster acceptance of voice over Internet protocol.

  • Smart spaces. Ideas about pervasive computing and location provide opportunities for new services.

  • Online medical consultation. Demand for health information points to one of the few content areas that might generate revenue.

  • Web services. The emergence of agreed-upon standards looks ready to drive the development of the Semantic Web.

These topics are important to planning and strategy managers and to business-development organizations looking for new business opportunities in the digital realm.
